Il Rothko era stato stimato tra 70 e 100 milioni di dollari: il prezzo pagato comprendente i diritti d’asta ha, in un certo senso, deluso le aspettative, anche alla luce della impeccabile provenienza. In ogni caso si tratta di un risultato clamoroso, che vale il secondo posto nella classifica delle vendite dell’artista, a un passo dagli 86,8 milioni di dollari di \u00abOrange, Red, Yellow\u00bb (Chrisie’s, 2012). <\/p>\n
\u201cBrown and Blacks in Reds\u201d \u00e8 stato acquistato per telefono dopo una battaglia di pochi minuti. Il vicepresidente della casa d’aste Sotheby’s e responsabile del dipartimento di arte contemporanea, David Galperim, ha definito il mercato “selettivo, ma capace di entusiasmarsi”. \u201cIl numero di collezionisti disposti e in grado di fare offerte per un’opera di quelle dimensioni e di quel valore \u00e8 limitato\u201d, ha spiegato Galperin, notando che il mercato dell’artista negli ultimi anni \u00e8 stato relativamente tranquillo, con solo una manciata di grandi quadri arrivata all’asta negli ultimi anni e nessuno venduto per oltre 70 milioni di dollari. <\/p>\n

Mark Rothko realizz\u00f2 37 dipinti nel 1957, un anno significativo durante il quale speriment\u00f2 considerevolmente con la palette e il formato delle sue celebri astrazioni. Entro il 1957, Rothko aveva ben padroneggiato il formato che avrebbe definito la sua vita e il suo lavoro e per la prima volta riusciva a guadagnarsi da vivere con la sola pittura. <\/p>\n
In Brown and Blacks in Reds<\/em>, il capolavoro centrale della collezione di Robert Mnuchin, vediamo realizzati i suoi obiettivi: il dipinto esprime in modo potente cosa significhi dipingere, percepire, vivere e sentire. Il nero e il rosso brillante non rappresentano un’immagine, ma un incontro diretto con l’artista al massimo delle sue capacit\u00e0, dando forma concreta a quel senso di passione profonda che appartiene all’esperienza umana. Lo spirito, la composizione e i colori di Brown and Blacks in Reds<\/em> suggeriscono molti paragoni con la storia dell’arte. Nessuno, per\u00f2, si \u00e8 rivelato cos\u00ec significativo come The Red Studio<\/em> di Henri Matisse, esposto al Museum of Modern Art e visitato pi\u00f9 volte da Rothko stesso. <\/p>\n
Brown and Blacks in Reds<\/em> appartenne inizialmente a Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc., che acquis\u00ec l’opera dalla Sidney Janis Gallery di New York e la install\u00f2 con orgoglio nella lobby dell’omonimo Seagram Building di Manhattan, unica opera dell’artista ad aver avuto l’onore di essere esposta nello spazio progettato da Mies van der Rohe e Philip Johnson. Rothko, tuttavia, cominci\u00f2 a essere turbato dalla possibile riduzione di questi lavori a semplice decorazione, anzich\u00e9 esperienze a s\u00e9 stanti. Alla fine li ritir\u00f2, trattenne le opere e don\u00f2 nove tele alla Tate, le cui sale avrebbero potuto rispettarne la sovranit\u00e0 e l’autorit\u00e0 evocativa. <\/p>\n
“I quadri devono essere miracolosi”, afferm\u00f2 Rothko, “nel momento in cui uno viene completato, l’intimit\u00e0 tra la creazione e il creatore si interrompe. Lui diventa un estraneo. Robert Mnuchin (1933-2025) \u00e8 stata una figura di primo piano del mercato dell\u2019arte internazionale e protagonista silenzioso ma determinante della stagione d\u2019oro del collezionismo americano. Nato a Manhattan nel 1933 e cresciuto a Scarsdale in una famiglia ebrea che collezionava arte moderna, Mnuchin si form\u00f2 a Yale, dove si laure\u00f2 nel 1955. La passione per l\u2019arte, coltivata in parallelo alla carriera finanziaria, si tradusse nel tempo in un collezionismo raffinato e coerente, centrato sull\u2019Espressionismo Astratto americano. <\/p>\n
Alla guida delle sue gallerie \u2013 prima C&M Arts, poi L&M Arts e infine Mnuchin Gallery \u2013 divenne uno dei mercanti pi\u00f9 influenti nel campo dell\u2019arte moderna e del secondo dopoguerra, trattando opere di Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock e Andy Warhol.<\/p>\n
Il suo nome entr\u00f2 definitivamente nella storia del mercato nel 2019, quando si aggiudic\u00f2 per conto di Cohen il celebre Rabbit<\/em> (1986) di Jeff Koons da Christie\u2019s per 91 milioni di dollari, allora record assoluto per un artista vivente.
