The emerging Image

Contemporary Paintings between figuration and abstraction by Marjan Fahimi

Marjan Fahimi is an Iranian contemporary artist whose paintings explore the subtle boundary between figuration and abstraction. Inspired by both urban and natural landscapes, she develops a highly experimental painting process in which chance, material transformation, and intuition become essential parts of the creative act.

Her contemporary paintings are created through multiple layers of color that are partially removed, allowing unexpected forms, textures, and visual traces to emerge from the surface. This process of subtraction reveals images that seem to exist between memory and perception, inviting viewers to discover landscapes, figures, and emotional narratives hidden within the paint.

Rather than offering fixed representations, Fahimi’s artworks remain open to interpretation. Each painting becomes a space where matter and imagination meet, encouraging a personal dialogue between the artwork and the observer. Through this continuous balance between abstraction and recognition, Marjan Fahimi creates contemporary paintings that celebrate uncertainty, visual discovery, and the poetic potential of the painting process.

Marjan Fahimi (Tehran, Iran, 1982) is an Iranian contemporary artist based in Rome. She began studying painting at the age of fifteen at Hossein Maher’s Studio in Tehran before continuing her education in Italian Language and Literature at the University of Tehran.

Her artistic career started with solo exhibitions in Tehran, including Urban Details (2003) and Birds (2004). That same year she moved to Rome to study Architecture, where the encounter with Renaissance and Baroque art profoundly influenced her artistic research.

Inspired by both urban and natural landscapes, Fahimi has developed a distinctive painting practice that explores the relationship between figuration and abstraction through layered surfaces, subtraction, and the transformation of matter. Since 2016, she has incorporated transparent resin into her contemporary paintings, enhancing their depth, luminosity, and sensory dimension.

Today, her artworks investigate perception, memory, and the poetic dialogue between materiality and imagination.
